“ Life doesn’t always play fair. So you’ve got to make the most of Those Stolen Moments. At any opportunity. Because if you don’t. Someone else will.”
It has been 7 years since the last Amongst The Pigeons album and 5 years since they said they would not be making any more music, but things change.
The seeds of the third Amongst The Pigeons album; ‘Those Stolen Moments’, happened by accident in July 2018 while producer/performer Daniel Parsons was in Perch, his local coffee shop.
While working on his laptop he started recording some of the ‘clinking’ in the background and very quickly turned it into a beat. Upon returning home and going to his ‘shedio’ the song was fully fleshed and became ‘Perching’; the first new ATP song since 2014.
After finishing that first new song, he had no intention of making any more, but before he knew it Daniel had quite a few ideas bouncing round. The majority of these songs started as ideas on a laptop or even on an iPhone (Inflight Entertainment started on a flight to Poland).
The biggest challenge was finding the time to work on these ideas and turn them into songs. Like many other musicians, Daniel was trying to juggle a full-time job (including a 4 hour daily commute), spending time with his young family and doing all the other tasks that seem to engulf our daily lives. But these new ideas kept coming, and in order to work on them Daniel had to find pockets of time that didn’t really exist and that is where the album title ‘Those Stolen Moments’ comes from.
That theme runs throughout many of the song titles, such as ‘The 25th hour’, the first single to be taken from the album. That song was made in the ‘lost hour’ when the clocks go back in Autumn.
Unlike the first two Amongst The Pigeons albums, ‘Those Stolen Moments’ does not feature any guest vocalists, instead the songs focus more on the electronica side of things with samples and recorded real life noises used to full effect.
The opening track ‘Happy Beginnings’ features samples from an old ‘how to make music’ vinyl that was acquired at a car boot sale and ‘Thinking Is Addictive’ features a speech from Eckhart Tolle about humans needing to be mindful.
The album features nine tracks, and clocks in at under 27 minutes. The majority of the songs are all less than three minutes long, and it is only the album closer, ‘Water into Whisky’, that goes beyond the four minute mark.
The closing track was initially a 10 second loop that was slowly expanded and broken apart to become a song that would not sound out of place on an Orbital album, with a vocal choir, fractured guitar and sci-fi sounding synths.
Following their five year break the album is very much the sound of ‘Amongst The Pigeons 2.0’ but still keeps the unexpected twists and turns that made ATP unique with the first two albums and earlier EPs.
‘Those Stolen Moments’ is released on 15 November 2019 on the Peace and Feathers label with ‘The 25th Hour’ preceding it on 18 October 2019.
